King Rhobar II requires large quantities of magical ore to forge powerful weapons, and for this reason operates the mines in Khorinis with all available prisoners.

To prevent these prisoners from escaping, the monarch commissions his best mages to summon a magical barrier. But something goes wrong. The magic spirals out of control and a mutiny turns the mine valley into a lawless territory ruled by the most brutal prisoners.
