It's summer, the sun is shining and the vacation season is upon us. The family is ready for a long car ride on vacation, and the Gotthard Pass is calling! But which exit should you take to reach your destination relaxed and safe? In this blog post, we reveal the best tips and tricks for a successful trip.

The right preparation is everything
Before you set off, you should prepare well for your long journey. This includes not only packing your bags, but also a thorough inspection of your car. Make sure that your vehicle is in perfect condition and that all the necessary documents are on board. Don't forget to schedule enough breaks to allow both driver and passenger to rest and relax.

Choosing the optimal exit
The Gotthard Pass is one of the main arteries in Switzerland, connecting the north and south of the country. If you are traveling by car towards Ticino or Italy, the pass is often unavoidable. However, the best exit depends on your starting point and itinerary.

In general, if you are coming from the Zurich or Basel area, you should take the A2 highway toward Lucerne and then toward the Gotthard. If you are coming from the Bern area, it is recommended to take the A1 in the direction of Zurich and then the A2 in the direction of Gotthard.

Especially during the vacation season, the Gotthard Pass can become a traffic jam trap. To avoid the traffic stress, it is recommended to listen carefully to the traffic reports and to choose an alternative route if necessary. The San Bernardino route via the A13 is a popular option to avoid the Gotthard tunnel. Another option is to drive over the Simplon Pass if you are heading towards western Switzerland or France.
