The light is fading, and dusk is falling over Valisthea.
For centuries, people flocked to the Mother Crystals to receive their blessings - the abundant amount of Aether that enables the working of magic and is the foundation of life in Valisthea. Now, as the Aether threatens to run dry and the uninhabitable Dead Land continues to expand, the struggle for the last rays of crystalline light takes on increasingly desperate features.
But in these times of approaching darkness, there are those who believe that the legacy of the crystals has shaped the destiny of mankind long enough.
Clive Rosfield - The firstborn son of the Grand Duke of Rosaria. Although everyone expected him to inherit the flames of the Phoenix and awaken as its Dominus, fate instead chose his younger brother Joshua to shoulder that burden. In search of a role of his own, Clive devoted himself to swordplay. He proved his skill when, at the age of only fifteen, he won the ducal tournament and was named First Shield of Rosaria. Now he was charged with protecting the Phoenix, and in return was blessed with the ability to control some of its fire. Unfortunately, at the hands of a mysterious dark esper, Ifrit, Clive's promising career ends in tragedy, leading him down a dark and dangerous path of revenge.
Joshua Rosfield - The second son of the Grand Duke of Rosaria and Clive's five years younger brother. Joshua awoke soon after his birth as Dominus of the Phoenix. Despite his distinguished upbringing, Joshua treats all of his father's subjects with warmth and affection - but none more so than Clive, whom he deeply admires. Joshua often laments that it was he, the frail bookworm of the family, who was given dominion over the flames of the Firebird, and not his stronger, braver brother. While Clive is happy to throw himself into any danger, Joshua squirms at the sight of a carrot on his plate. But his worries are abruptly eclipsed when he, too, is swept up in the tragic events that change Clive's life forever.
Jill Warrick - When the Northern Territories fell, Jill was taken from her homeland to Rosaria as a child and placed in care to keep the peace between the two nations. The Grand Duke insisted that she be raised with his sons, and now, at the age of twelve, she is as much a part of the Rosfield household as Clive and Joshua. Always kind, gracious, and humble, Jill has become a trusted confidante of the brothers.
Benedikta Harman - After the hard years of her youth that left her cold and ruthless, Benedikta Harman gained command of Waluth's royal scouts through her swordsmanship and cunning. As Dominus of Garuda, the Lady of the Wind, she is sent on a mission to find the mysterious second Esper of Fire. In the process, she meets Clive, who has the same goal - a confrontation that will force her to confront her past.
