During the mating season in summer, one can sometimes hear the loud barking of the male deer as a strong declaration of territory from quite a distance in the forest. The females usually give birth to two young (fawns) in the spring of the following year, which spend their first weeks of life hidden and well-camouflaged with their spotted white fur in tall grass or thickets. The mother only returns to nurse her young.
