Founded by elementary school teacher Josef Steffen in Wolhusen in Lucerne in 1860, Stewo first produced paper bags and envelopes as a homeworker. In addition to factory buildings with its own printing shop, the constant developments and, from 1954, the company's own laboratory also brought many technological advances. In 1934, Stewo was the first manufacturer of wrapping paper in Switzerland, in 1971 presented the first plastic bag for packaging fresh bread and in 1984 the first metallized paper. With the subdivision of the product range into different lines, with ecological wrapping paper and with its own design studio in Wolhusen, Stewo followed economic and social trends in the 1990s. Today the company belongs to Baier & Schneider GmbH, prints around 40 million meters of wrapping paper per year, has a special collection of serviettes and exports to over 40 countries around the world.
