By tamping, the coffee grounds in the filter are compressed to create a firm and even coffee puck with a smooth and level surface.
Proper tamping prevents channeling and achieves a uniform extraction of all the coffee grounds. This allows all the flavor compounds from the coffee to be extracted.
This is the second generation of the Flash Tamper from MHW 3Bomber, and the base is additionally coated with black titanium.
The Flash Tamper 2.0 is a pressure-regulated tamper with a preset pressure of 13.6 kg. When the preset pressure is reached, a mechanical signal sounds as feedback, and the tamper releases the pressure. After several trials, MHW 3Bomber found that at a constant pressure of 13.6 kg, the extraction rate is nearly the same across different amounts of coffee grounds and varying extraction times. The outer ring, which rests flat on the portafilter, ensures that the tamper is always pressed straight down. The tamper is simply placed on top and pressed down, with the spring pulling the base back up.
This tamper fits perfectly on 51 mm portafilters.
The tamper features an ergonomic handle and feels good in the hand. Additionally, the bottom is equipped with concentric grooves, allowing more coffee grounds to come into contact with the water, leading to better extraction.
The entire tamper is made from high-quality materials. The handle is made of solid walnut wood, the middle part consists of an aluminum alloy, and the spring and base (titanium-coated) are made of stainless steel (SUS304).
The entire tamper is disassemblable and can therefore be easily cleaned.
