There are 17 species of penguins, with the emperor penguin being the largest at 1.1 meters. They have a blue-gray back and a white belly with a characteristic yellow coloring on it. Many penguins mate for life, but the emperor penguin is one of the few that do not. They typically have one mate per year, but still take on a paternal role with their offspring. They care for the freshly laid eggs by standing over them for up to two months to keep them warm and protected. During this time, the males eat nothing.  That's what I call dedicated babysitting!
