When building shock absorbers, it is important to keep the piston rods scratch-free. Holding the piston rod with a regular pliers can cause light grooves/scratches on the piston rod. These scratches can damage the seal in the damper during compression. The result is a leaking damper.
That’s why there are pliers made of aluminum with a cutout for the piston rod. Aluminum is softer than steel and leaves no scratches. To ensure a good grip on the piston rod, the pliers almost completely encircle the piston rod.
If you still find aluminum too hard, you can also use the included nylon inserts. These will definitely leave no traces.
With the three differently sized cutouts, the pliers can be used for all common shock absorbers in scales of 1:12, 1:10, and 1:8.
