FX9 firmware roadmap

All updates are subject to change without notice, and the descriptions do not represent all of the features that have been implemented. The following information was published in September 2019 and will be updated as necessary.

Based on ongoing discussions with content creators, FX9 is gaining significant new functionality through firmware updates.

6K full-frame "Exmor R" sensor for breathtaking image quality
The camera's full-frame 6K sensor enables excellent recording in DCI 4K *, Ultra HD and HD resolutions. Powerful image processing with debayering and oversampling ensures image quality beyond the limits of conventional Super 35mm sensors. The backlit CMOS image sensor also uses Sony's Exmor R technology for enhanced sensitivity and noise reduction. Compared to a 4K Super 35mm sensor, the 6K sensor of the FX9 has twice the surface area and at the same time offers a larger viewing angle and a smaller depth of field.

* DCI 4K (4096 x 2160 at 17: 9 recording) will be available with the future firmware version.


Phenomenal 15+ stop dynamic range for limitless expression.

The FX9 offers an exceptional dynamic range of 15+ levels - beyond the normal range of human perception - and allows unprecedented creative freedom in color correction and posting. Cinematographers can focus on framing the scene they want, while relying on the FX9 to capture all the nuances and details using either the internal 4K 4: 2: 2: 2 10-bit recording or the external 16-bit -Rraw recording. * Grading allows colorists to find color and detail beyond the normal vision of the cameraman to create a final image that accurately reflects the mood of the scene.

RAW recording requires a future firmware version and an external recorder.


Dual Base ISO for impressive images in any light

The FX9 has a basic sensitivity of ISO 800 and offers the optimal dynamic range for typical documentary applications such as recordings outdoors or in brightly lit interiors. A secondary high base sensitivity of ISO 4000 is characterized by excellent image quality in poor lighting conditions such as mornings and evenings. ISO 4000 is also ideal if you are using slow lenses. The combination of Dual Base ISO with the camera's electronic variable ND filter provides excellent creative control in almost any shooting environment and enables next-generation responsiveness to changing conditions.
